Vikings fall 4-3 to HF-L in a great ball game!

Mendon and HF-L met for the second time in a week today and played a great ball game. Both teams made many plays behind their starting pitchers.  Tim Oliver was on the hill for Mendon and pitched 5 strong innings. Andrew Bailey threw for HF-L and earned a complete game victory.  Mendon trailed 3-0 early, but chipped away at the lead and tied the game at 3 in the 6th. HF-L then perfectly executed a suicide squeeze in the bottom of the 6th to take a 1 run lead. The play at the plate was a bang, bang play that went in favor of the home Cougars.  Mendon was able to get the tying run to second base in the top of 7 but the game ended on another bang, bang play at 1st and HF-L had earned the win.  Mendon gets a day off tomorrow and then hosts West Irondequoit in our senior game Friday afternoon at 5:00. Mendon is now 10-5 on the season.

Vikings earn a split this weekend and run their record to 9-4

On a Friday afternoon more suited for indoor activities, the Vikings played host to the Barons of Brighton.   Tim Oliver took to the hill and delivered 4 solid innings facing just 1 batter over the minimum.  At the end of 4, Mendon had a 1-0 lead on a Nate Dickinson RBI single to right.  Things changed in the fifth as Brighton got a lead off single, a walk and an RBI double to tie the game.  Brighton then went up 3-1 on a 2 RBI single.  With one out and runners on 1st and 2nd, an inning ending double play ball was mishandled by the Vikings and the flood gates opened!  Brighton took advantage of the error and put up 9 runs in the inning on a series of hits and Viking misplays.  In the end, Brighton had a 13-2 victory and the Vikings move on to fight another day.
On Saturday afternoon, Mendon hosted HF-L in another league match up. HF-L started quickly as Andrew Bailey drilled a 3 run homer to right center in the top of the first.  HF-L added another run in the inning that was rainy and unsettled for the Vikings. Down 4-0, Mendon came to the plate and answered the call with a breakout inning of their own plating 7 runs and giving new life to our starting pitcher Mitch Breitenbach. Mitch and the bats took over from there as Mendon pounded out 14 hits against HF-L pitching and Breitenbach put up zeros through the rest of the game.  In the end Mendon had a convincing 17-4 victory and showed the type of resiliency this team has been working towards for a few years now.  Breitenbach finished the complete game and got stronger every inning! On the offensive side of the ball, Samuel Anaya continued his terrific season at the dish with another 4 for 4 day with 2 doubles and 3 RBI. Ryan Amoroso also continued his hitting ways going 3 for 3 and driving in 2 RBI. Mendon finished this cold and rainy week with a 3-1 record which bolstered their season total to 9-4. Mendon travels to Eastridge tomorrow for the last non league contest of the season.
